Our first hangover!! We didn’t get to bed until well after 1am and we lost another hour going from Estonia to Russia. Not good at all!!

We had organised a tour today to visit Catherine’s Palace in the morning and then the Hermitage Museum in the afternoon. You were not able to take photo’s in either venue unless you paid and as we were under the weather, we did not take up this opportunity, hence the lack of photo’s today. The Palace was HUGE – the town had been occupied by Nazi forces in WWII and when they left, they burnt the palace to the ground, including the beautiful gardens. The structure remained and the town has painfully restored the palace to near original condition. The one room which is amazing is the Amber room – the Germans gifted this back to the Russians after the palace was restored. The whole room is just Amber stone. Amazing.

We had lunch in the palace grounds before heading off to the Hermitage museum. It contains artworks, etc from not just Russia but many European artists – Rembrandt, Picasso, etc. They had originals and was good to take in the works. The tour went for around 2.5 hours and then we headed back to the ship.

Another day tomorrow in St Petersburg. Hoping to see more of the city and also get more photo’s.
